The corn crop
continued
The family is in the field, cultivating the corn, probably in late July. Appears to be Alma Eckberg on the right and probably Art Eckberg on the left.
This appears to be a picture of a field of corn which has been blown down by a summer storm. The two younger children in the picture are unidentified.
In the mid-1920s, there were no mechanized corn pickers. Many farmers brought the whole crop of corn in to the farm area on the stalks and put them through a shredder. The shredder separated the ears of corn from the stalks and leaves, which were then shredded. The shredded corn was used for fodder and bedding. In this picture, shocks of corn are unloaded from the farm truck and are leaning up against the barn as Olof is feeding them into the shredder. The power for the shredder, like that for so much of the farm equipment, came from a long belt attached to the power-takeoff of the Case tractor.
