Lars Olsson Ekberg was born October 13, 1843 in Hylteberga, Sweden. He was the son of Ohla Larsson Nyman (the "Nyman" being a military name he acquired while serving as a soldier) and Boel Gerdtsdotter. When he was younger, Lars used the name Lars Olsson Nyman, after his father's military name, but when he entered the military service he acquired the "Ekberg" surname. His wife, Anna Larsdotter, was born on September 13, 1834 in Skurup, Sweden and was the daughter of Lars Jeppsson and Anna Bengtsdotter. They were married December 8, 1865.
