The family name was spelled many different ways in the early days in
Holzgerlingen. Among the spellings found are Schaeffer, Schaefer, Scheffer,
Schefer, Shefer, Schefe, and Schoeffer. All these different spellings are
found in a 40 year span from about 1560 to 1600.
The early records in the church of Holzgerlingen consist only of birth records
beginning in 1556. There are death records beginning in 1600 (after our Conrad
was already in Bischofsheim) and the marriage records also begin well after our
family left town.
