Bringing in the oats
Continued
This picture was taken in the late 1920s, after Olof had bought his Case tractor. The Case is pulling the binder while another worker operates the binder. In the back, other persons are following in a horse-drawn wagon to gather the bundles into shocks.
The family members have stopped to shock oats and possibly to work on the binder, replacing the twine or something. In 1920 Olof paid $36.00 for 100 pounds of twine and paid $4.50 for repairs on his binder.
After the grain, whether oats or wheat, had dried in the fields for a time, the shocks were gathered up in wagons and taken to the farmyard where the threshing was actually done. The boys sometimes hired out to neighbors to make some money. This picture is a postcard sent to the family by Lawrence. On the back is: "Friday August 7, 1925. It is raining again today enough to spoil trashing (sic). We will not be through until about Tuesday August 11 if everything goes alright. We are not (now?) at Merril Einsele. Lawrence Eckberg"
