Helpful Hints for Homemakers
1. When painting and you want to set your paint away for a few days, pour parafin over it, and it will prevent the skum from forming.
2. In winter heat clothes pins before using and it will prevent fingers getting cold.
3. Cut flowers may be kept by adding salt to the water.
4. Salt dissolved in alcohol or ammonia will remove grease spots.
5. To remove mildew, dip the article in buttermilk and lay it in sun.
6. A teaspoon of turpentine boiled with your white clothes will greatly aid in the whitening process.
7. To keep lard perfectly always keep in stoneware.
8. Borax added to the wash will help whiten clothes that have become yellow with age.
9. When contents of pans boil over, salt on the range prevents odors, and the spot is more easily cleaned.
10. Lemon and salt remove stains from the fingers. Do not use soap afterwards.
11. To remove white marks on furniture caused by heat or water, hold a hot iron near the spot, the heat will draw it back to color.
12. Salt and vinegar will remove tea stains from china.
13. To remove ink stains from fingers, rub spot with a sulpher match then wash with soap.
14. If soot falls upon your rug, don't sweep until it has been thickly covered with dry salt, then sweep and it can be swept up without leaving a spot.
15. A pinch of soda added to milk that is to be boiled will keep it from curdling.
16. To get rid of ants, place a lump of camphor gum in their run ways.
17. When boiling vegetables add a lump of sugar to the water. It is as effectual as soda and perfectly harmless.
18. To remove odors from iceboxes and cupboards, fill a dish with boiling water and drop in it a piece of charcoal.
19. Tough meat may be made tender by pounding or slow cooking or dipping it in cold water which vinegar has been added.
