Wintertime activity

In winter, the pace of activity on the farm slowed somewhat, as by then the crops were in, the canning had mostly been done, and the animals were finished with reproducing. There were still the chores to be done, however, with animals to be fed daily, the cows to be milked, and in addition, winter was a time to repair harnesses, sharpen the tools and make repairs needed before the coming spring activities. There were other things to be done as well, opportunities provided by Mother Nature, as when a snowstorm blew in so the kids could go out and play in the snow!

This is how the farm area looked after a snowstorm in the mid-1920s. The roads have been rutted from the rains in the fall, and now are frozen in the snow.

This appears to be the farm path leading from the road up to the Eckberg farm. It is snow-covered and shows only some footprints; no vehicle tracks are seen.

The family is digging out after the snowstorm. The garage door is open and the car can be seen inside. The family is probably digging out a path for the car, or perhaps is digging out the wagons to go riding in, as will be seen in another picture.
