After the walls are completed, the small kids man the fort. Two small American flags can be seen on the front wall of the fort.
The stock is in the barnyard feeding on fodder put out by the family. Melting snow is flowing down the road in the foreground.
Orville and Kenneth Eckberg are out in the snow by the car. Orville is carrying a gun, probably to go after "varmits." In winter, when field mice and gophers were scarce, the weasels and foxes would be even more likely to come after the farm's poultry.
