Cutting wood
The farm home of the Eckberg family was heated by coal or wood-burning stoves. In addition, the cookstove Ida Eckberg and her daughters used was wood-burning. Therefore, Olof and his sons had to provide the necessary fuel. Here is a series of pictures showing them cutting up wood, probably from timber on their property, to get them through the coming winter. This first picture shows Olof in the center, with sons Art, Lawrence and Orville, cutting up logs with an open, unshielded 24 inch buzz saw. Power for the saw is provided by the belt drive seen in the picture.
Orville, Lawrence, Olof and Art Eckberg stand surrounded by firewood. The Case tractor, which provides the power for their saw, is just seen in the center.
This appears to be Art and Olof Eckberg cutting small logs into firewood lengths. This is an excellent view of the Case tractor and its belt drive powering the saw.
